Over the past month, while teaching the kids class, three times the story that fell in succession with the materials we were using, was about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace. I don’t know if God was speaking more to the kids or to me. Evidently, He had a lesson He wanted someone to learn.
There are so many aspects of this story that we can take a lesson from. One point that comes across with the story is that they went through the fire and their clothes were not burned, their hair was not singed and they didn’t even smell like smoke. What that has always said to me is that we can go through a trial and when we know God, He will bring us out without any side effects or damages and we can have a victorious attitude about it.
The statue of King Nebuchadnezzar was ninety feet tall. In telling the story it was hard for the kids to really understand the size of that. Ninety feet is the size of a nine-story building. Another point we can glean from the story is that no matter how big or intimidating the problem may seem, God is bigger.
There are many take aways from this story and everyone has their own perspective on it, but the part that has stood out to me, as I have taught it this time, was what the three young men told King Nebuchadnezzar. They said, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God who we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if He doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” (Daniel 3:16-18) To me that says, no matter what we have to go through, even when it doesn’t seem that God sees us or is there to rescue us, we will not turn our backs on Him. He is still God and He is still good!
